Special Open Thursday
Bob Silver - A Special Open Thursday:
INJA 1.2

Bob’s Elephant Pic

Bob’s Elephant Pic

Everybody is invited! Yes, that’s right, all Los Angeles Adventurers’ Club members in good standing are invited by our past President Bob Silver (#728) to be his guests, with their main squeeze, for dinner and a program about "Inja," one of Bob’s favorite subjects. This will be his 50th program at the Club and he is inviting all members in good standing and their wives or girl friends to be his guest for dinner, as long as you call and reserve no later than Tuesday, September 2.

You can look forward to his adventures filmed during the early 1960s on the great subcontinent soon after the British Raj, from Burma to Bamian: spring avalanches in the Karakorams, his arrest on the Burma-Chinese border and Indian jails, Ravi Shankar in Delhi, drugs in Swat, black sea gulls in Sri Lanka, body surfing with poisonous snakes at sea, making paper in Akbar-the-Great’s former capital, sail-gliding at Safterjung, pig sticking, gold workers on strike, participating in a wedding Bharat (the groom’s party), Tibetan Tulkus at Kailash, working elephants in Chittagong, falling in love in Madras, eating French cuisine in Hydrabad, and even a KGB girlfriend in Cochinchina.

Please join us with your partner for dinner on Bob, and for this humorous and entertaining reminiscence.

The Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles thanks our member, Bob Silver, for volunteering this presentation.

Ladies Night - Open Thursday
Paul Bishop - Terrorism Threats

Paul Bishop

Paul Bishop

How do you crack the toughest criminals, psychopaths and pathological liars, cases where no forensics tie the criminal to the crime? The stakes are always very high in a criminal interrogation, get it wrong and a killer can go on killing or an innocent person goes to jail. It’s the ultimate cat and mouse game. What is the science of interrogation? What are the key elements in its arsenal? How have they led to the conviction of the toughest criminals or cleared the innocent? This is the story of the techniques and science of Paul Bishop and how they have been applied in real-life cases, using actual police interrogation cases. Paul will reveal the exciting frontiers of this "cat-and-mouse" science. Modern technology has even allowed functional MRI’s to look inside the brain and reveal how people use different parts of the brain when they are lying.

A thirty-five year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, Paul Bishop’s career has included a three year tour with his department’s Anti-Terrorist Division and over twenty-five years’ experience in the investigation of sex crimes. His Special Assaults Units regularly produced the highest number of detective initiated arrests and highest crime clearance rates in the city. Twice honored as Detective of the Year, Paul has also received the Quality and Productivity Commission Award from the City of Los Angeles.

As a nationally recognized interrogator, Paul starred as the lead interrogator and driving force behind the ABC TV reality show, Take The Money and Run from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Based on his expertise in deception detection, he currently conducts interrogation seminars for law enforcement, military, and human resource organizations.

Paul has published twelve novels, including five in his L.A.P.D. Detective Fey Croaker series. He has also written numerous scripts for episodic television and feature films. He currently writes and edits the Fight Card series of hardboiled boxing novel under the pseudonym Jack Tunney.

The Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles thanks Dr. Lillian Roberts for recommending this speaker.

Joint Meeting with California Wreck Divers
L.A. Underwater Photo Society Members Invited
Dave Finnern & Steve Lawson
Last Flight: Southern California’s
Sunken P-38s

Sunken P-38

Sunken P-38

David Finnern and Steve Lawson have a combined diving / underwater experience of over 70 years. Steve and Dave have explored everything from World War II submarines, riverboats and sunken trains to antiquated warplanes, ghost ports and Civil War blockade runners. They have individually and collectively discovered an impressive list of shipwrecks, sunken aircraft and submerged ruins, including the long-lost river landing of Port Isabel in Mexico. Their exploits have been published extensively.

Among their recent projects, Steve and Dave have spent the last year exploring and photographing two World War II fighter aircraft in deep water off the coast of Orange County. On January 18, 1944, a P-38 Lightning fighter collided with an F4U Corsair off the coast. One of the pilots was able to parachute to safety while the other tragically went down with his plane. Both planes were lost to history until recently.

P-38 "Lightning"

P-38 "Lightning"

The versatile Lightning performed many different missions during World War II, including dive bombing, level bombing, bombing through clouds, strafing, photo reconnaissance and long range escort. It first went into large-scale service during the North African campaign in November 1942, where the German pilots named it Der Gabelschwanz Teufel ("The Forked-Tail Devil"). When the Lightning began combat operations from England in September 1943, it was the only fighter with the range to escort bombers into Germany.

The Lightning truly shined in the Pacific theater; seven of the top eight scoring USAAF aces in the Pacific flew the P-38. On April 18, 1943, the long range of the P-38 enabled USAAF pilots to ambush and shoot down an aircraft carrying Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who was the planner of the Pearl Harbor raid and the commander of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The P-38 became the standard USAAF fighter in the Pacific theater until the closing months of WWII.
