Bill and Jill Morse – Moving to Cambodia to Support Landmine Removal: The Amazing Story of Aki Ra and His Life

photo of Danger Sign

Bill Morse, member 1130, and his wife Jill started their adventure in 2003 when they traveled to Cambodia in search of Aki Ra, an ex-child soldier of the Khmer Rouge who was clearing landmines with a stick and caring for wounded children. The started a charity called the Landmine Relief Fund to support Aki Ra's work. In 2009 they moved to Cambodia to pursue their passion and help their newfound family.

Our member, Bill Morse, and his wife Jill moved to Cambodia to work with CNN Hero Aki Ra and the Self Help Demining organization. This will be an update on the progress and experiences of their journey to assist the removal of land mines, work with kids who were disabled by land mine explosions and the rehabilitiation of small village farming lands so the villages can be self supporting.

It is an immense challenge and we will be enlightened with information on the results of the long wars there and how the country is recovering.

Kevin Bains - State of Space

Kevin Bains

Kevin Baines is a planetary scientist at the CalTech/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California and at the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a NASA-named science team member on the Galileo mission to Jupiter, the Cassini/Huygens mission to Saturn, and the Venus Express mission to Venus, he has explored the composition, structure and dynamic meteorology of these planets, discovering in the process the northern vortex on Saturn, a jet stream on Venus, the first spectroscopically-identifiable ammonia clouds on both Jupiter and Saturn, and the carbon-soot-based thunderstorm clouds of Saturn. He also was instrumental in discovering that the global environmental disaster caused by sulfuric acid clouds unleashed by the impact of an asteroid or comet some 65 million years ago was a root cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. n 2006, he also re-discovered Saturn’s north polar hexagon - last glimpsed upon its discovery by Voyager in 1981 - which in 2011 Astronomy magazine declared the third most “weirdest object in the cosmos”.

When not studying the skies and clouds of our neighboring planets, Kevin can often be found flying within those of the Earth as an avid FAA-certified flight instructor, having logged over 8000 hours (nearly a full year) of flight time instructing engineers, scientists and even astronauts in the JPL/Caltech community.

Dr. Kevin Baines is a Principal Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California and a Senior Scientist with the Space Science and Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, specializing in the study of planetary atmospheres, particularly in studies of storm systems and clues to how the planets formed and evolved through the eons. He is a NASA-named Co-Investigator on the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft currently orbiting Saturn, and the NASA-named Leader of the American Science Team for the European Venus Express mission currently on-orbit about the Evening Star. He is also a member of the Science Team of the New Horizons Mission currently enroute to Pluto.

Over three decades, Dr. Baines has authored or co-authored over 180 peer-reviewed papers on the nature of planetary atmospheres as revealed by planetary spacecraft, the Hubble Space Telescope, and his own observations obtained with major telescopes from the high mountains of Arizona, California, and Hawaii. More recently, he has authored papers on a diverse range of topics, including the discovery of ammonia clouds and storms on Jupiter, the discovery of a deep layer of storms and clouds on Saturn, and the discovery of trace volcanic emission gases on Titan. He is also the leader of the proposed VALOR Mission to fly a high-altitude balloon in the skies of Venus for a month, circumnavigating the planet 5 times while exploring the planet in unprecedented detail.

The Adventurers Club thanks Rosaly Lopes for introducing us to Dr. Baines

Ladies Night
Bob Silver - India: The Journey is the Destination

In the 1960's, Bob Silver traveled to India to follow in the footsteps of Rudyard Kipling's Kim. Back then India still felt like it did 100 years ago, like in the days of Kipling. Bob will discuss the exciting people he met and places he visited in his yearlong sojourn. This is Bob's 50th program given at the Club.

Jim Dorsey - A Trek Up To Hell

At Erte Ale Volcano with Afar Gunmen

In February of 2011, Jim Dorsey (# 1081), and his wife Irene joined Dr. Rosaly Lopez of JPL and Ken Freund, along with three other planetary scientists on a journey into Ethiopia to study a rare shield volcano.

It was located in the northeastern corner of the country near the Eritrean border in the Danakil Depression where temperatures rarely drop below 120 F. They hired Afar gunmen to take them into the empty quarter that is known for ambushes and kidnappings, but had no idea just how big an adventure they were in for.

This was a triple flag expedition for the Adventurers Club, the Explorers Club, of which both Jim and Rosaly are fellows, and the Society of Women Adventurers of which Irene and Rosaly are longtime members.

Come and learn about one of the most dangerous and inhospitable places on earth when Jim gives his insiders take on events that almost sent him on the great adventure.
