October 14, 2010 - Dave Banks - The Virtue of Risk

Dave Banks, Documentary filmmaker, Writer and Photojournalist, presents stories and clips from life in the field.

Three-time Emmy-winning photojournalist and documentarian Dave Banks has spent 30 years in the field chronicling the human condition. From trekking across the Sahara Desert, hanging off cliffs in Australia and being hunted by the Turkish Army, Dave has encountered numerous risks in his illustrious career.

Despite his worldwide experiences, perhaps his biggest risk was to simply believe in himself. Told by teachers that his dyslexia would haunt him forever and profoundly diminish his professional opportunities, Dave found solace in an old Ansco box camera given to him by his grandmother. With an endless energy and a positive spirit that has served him well all over the globe, Dave delivers a passionate presentation complete with video clips, photographs and an engaging question and answer exchange that is sure to illustrate what can be accomplished by making the decision to believe in yourself.

During his career Dave’s most memorable moments have been:

  • Lost in landmine fields twice.
  • Chased by the Turkish army at the foot of Mt. Ararat in Eastern Turkey.
  • Dave has filmed his own rescue after a climbing accident on Half Dome in Yosemite Valley – California.
  • Been lost in the Sahara Desert in North Africa.
  • Crawled into the ancient tombs of Egypt and Israel.
  • Weathered storms in the Barents Sea in the Artic Circle off the coast of Russia.
  • Covered the War on in Afghanistan.
  • Worked and in the outback of Australia.
  • Climbed the Southern Alps of New Zealand and was permitted to film inside the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.

For Dave’s efforts he has been recognized with 13 Emmy Award nominations, has won three Emmys.

October 28, 2010 - Ladies Night - Bob Seidemann - Airplane as Art

"Airplane as Art" and other interesting adventures and personalities met and photographed through a camera lens.

Bob Seidemann gained notoriety in 1967 for a photographic interpretation of the Pieta by reversing the traditional subjects in a graphic combination of sexuality and violence. His most famous and controversial work was the album cover for Eric Clapton named "Blind Faith". Through out the 1960's and 1970's music artists Janis Joplin (semi nude), Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead, Jackson Brown, Neil Young and bands such as Traffic, Big Brother and The Holding Company were some of the fortunate groups to have been photographed by the talented photographer and graphic artist Bob Seidemann.

From the 1980's into the 1990's Bob travelled the world to compile 302 photographs of some of the most influential aviators and designers of aircraft still living at that time. This project took twenty years to complete and was sold at Sotheby's auction for $236,750. on October 12th, 2000. At least three of our own brother adventurers were the subjects of this immensely important work and Bob will be sharing these photographs this evening.

This is a rare opportunity to hear what it was like to photograph some of the most interesting and important personalities from the 20th century.
