Ladies Night - Paul Wong
From West of Tibet to East of China

Paul Wong

Member Paul Wong spent 61 days traversing the entire China, from the westernmost part of Tibet to the easternmost city in China-Shanghai. In his travel Paul likes to observe how things work to support all the unique communities he encountered and finding out what helps them to perpetuate the long-held traditions, some are thousands years old and are quite obsolete compared to the modern communities surround them. Paul has traveled extensively to Europe and Asia, often visiting remote areas away from the beaten path, sometimes relying on nothing more than a map or a tale. Paul gives credits to the multiple languages he is familiar with and common sense for his successful completion of these adventures.

During early part of his life Paul sampled a wide variety of work to support himself, earning just enough to support his next adventure then moving on. For example, in his travel throughout Thailand Paul took on jobs such as gold smuggler, shopkeeper, duck farm operator, poppy grower (ask him if you do not know what this is for), fisherman, storyteller, electrical and mechanical repairman, to name a few. Then, when he decided to hunker down he became almost immovable, working for one local government for more than 33 years.

Presently, Paul is on a three month solo adventure traversing the entire Japan from the southernmost island of Okinawa to the northernmost forest in Hokkaido. Along the way he will also circumnavigate the entire island of Taiwan, visit a few southern China cities, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.

During his 61-day Tibet-China trip, Paul visited many Tibetan back countries where many unique ancient traditions are still being practiced. For example, multiple sisters marrying one man and multiple brothers marrying one woman (how do they know who is the father). Paul also swung by the northern Mount Everest base camp, in Tibet, and hiked around Tibet’s most sacred mountain, Mount Kailash, which trail has a total of 52 kilometers and ascended to the height of more than 5,600 meters, or above 18,000 foot above sea level. Other interesting highlights of this trip included Paul’s visits to a thousand year old Yao village in the remote mountains in Quangzhou, China, and the miraculous finding of his father’s birth place along with a dozen first cousins he has never met or even heard of, all based on a family lore told by his father more than 50 years ago. Then at moment’s notice, Paul responded to a timely invite from a friend he met only on the Chinese social media and took a detour to the northern China city of Harbin, confirming the friend’s existence and enjoying the frozen Song Hua Jiang river and the art of ice carving. In addition to flying, riding trains and buses, horse and yak, Paul also logged more than one million footsteps on this journey. Paul is eager to share the excitement of this adventure and interesting photos.

Steve Elkins
Finding a Lost City: Legends, Discoveries, Consequences

Biography:

Steve Elkins

Steve Elkins

Steve has been working in television for 30 years as a cinematographer, editor, and producer. Before starting his media career, he received a B.S. in Earth Science from Southern Illinois University where he also did an interdisciplinary archaeological research project on a rock shelter site he discovered.

After several years as director of an environmental education program in Chicago and a field researcher for paleo-climate studies at the University of Wisconsin, Steve moved to Los Angeles where he initially worked in petroleum engineering before succumbing to the siren call of Hollywood.

His media career has garnered an Emmy as well numerous other industry awards. Desiring to blend his scientific interests with film-making, Steve has been fortunate to work on a variety of adventure and science oriented programming around the world.

Elkins became fascinated with the Honduran Mosquitia and its lost city legends while filming there in 1994. Reading about the advent of airborne lidar as a tool for unveiling archaeological ruins he formed a company in 2012 (UTL…Under the Lidar) with colleagues to explore the Mosquitia jungle using lidar while producing a documentary about the process and results that happen to include the discovery of two "lost cities."

In 2013, Steve and his UTL partner, Bill Benenson, were both selected as two of Foreign Policy Magazine’s Leading Global Thinkers of the Year for their innovative approach to exploration. In addition, their project was the subject of a feature story in the May 2013 issue of New Yorker magazine titled, "The Eldorado Machine."

Last year, with Steve as project leader, they organized a multi-disciplinary scientific ground expedition to one of the sites discovered by lidar in 2012. The results have garnered world headlines including an article in the October 2015 issue of National Geographic ("Lure of the Lost City") and a recent episode of National Geographic Explorer ("Legend of the Monkey God").
