Bill Nord is a one of the rare masters of portrait photography.

A world traveler, he will amaze us with his portraits ranging from Kenya to the homeless in the streets of Los Angles. Prepare to be fascinated with the images he brings and his talk. He is a long time photography teacher and photo competitor. He is so good that the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs (S4C) had to create a separate competition category for him because no one else could win against.

Bill will be giving a walk around to a limited group of photographers in the mean homeless streets of Los Angeles on June 9. Two places are taken already, two left. Join us for a splendid evening of worldwide trophy images and discussion.

TJ Johnston - Chief Instructor
In 1971, TJ Johnston established the Cal State Fullerton Kung Fu Club at the University as an assistant instructor to his Sifu Ted Lai. In 1984, upon the passing of Sifu Lai, TJ took over as Chief Instructor, offering both college students and the public a self defense training program based on fitness and realistic, practical defensive techniques. Running one of the few full-contact sparring classes available in Southern California, TJ encouraged practitioners from all the various styles to come and train together in a non-competitive format.

Having been involved in small-bore rifle shooting since he was eight years old, TJ had a long history of shooting. He wanted to offer his experience to introduce new people to the fun of shooting. In 1986, TJ became certified by the National Rifle Association as a Firearms Instructor. He currently holds Instructor ratings in Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Home Firearm Safety, Personal Protection in the Home, Personal Protection Outside the Home, and both Metallic Cartridge and Shot Shell Reloading. In 1990, the NRA appointed TJ as a Training Counselor, authorizing him train experienced shooters to become NRA Certified Instructors. Having helped to develop the Range Safety Officer program, TJ was appointed a Chief Range Safety Officer to train RSO's to professionally run live-fire ranges.

In 1992, TJ was elected to the NRA Board of Directors, where he served on the Education and Training Committee, served as Vice-Chair of the Grassroots Development Committee, and beginning in 1998, served for two years as Chairman of the Range Development Committee. Also in 1998, TJ was appointed by the NRA Training Department to conduct TC Workshops to train future Training Counselors. In 2000, as the NRA Training Department began to organize regional Training Counselors, they implemented a three-tier structure of Training Counselors, with that level (TC) as the beginning level. The next level of experience was established as Senior TC's. And TJ was elevated to the highest status of Master Training Counselor.)

In 2002 T.J. left the Marine Corps to pursue a career as a police officer. He became a sworn Police Officer for a local municipal Police Department in 2003. As a member of the Firearms Training Unit he has been California P.O.S.T. certified through the F.B.I. as a department Range Master and Firearms Instructor. He is certified through Taser Int. as a Taser instructor and armorer.

    The Compelling Power of Adventure
  • photo of Lin and Larry Pardey

    Lin and Larry Pardey
See Yachting Monthly (March 2012) in which they talk of
25 cruising Heroes and said they limited it to British sailors
except for Lin and Larry Pardey
    .

Facing hurricane-force winds off Cape Horn, reasoning with machine gun toting Egyptian soldiers in the isolated reaches of the Red Sea, living among the !kung bushmen of the Kalahari Desert, crossing the rugged mountains of Tasmania on horseback, Lin Pardey will share a few of her favorite stories from 43 years of voyaging with her husband Larry on an engineless offshore sailing vessel. She’ll discuss the lessons she learned by preparing for and completing challenging ocean voyages and how each adventure has lead to an ever increasing desire to expand her own boundaries.

Along the way you will learn the simple truths most adventures live by, truths that can apply to any endeavor, be it exploring new business ideas, searching for scientific discoveries or just working toward change within your own life. An underlying theme of her stories is; the most renowned adventurers considered themselves to be very ordinary people. Each overcame their fears, took that first step into the unfamiliar and went on to savor adventures’ compelling power. An illustrated portion of the talk showing the four adventures that shaped our lives, is part of this presentation.

Lin and Larry Pardey are a married couple famous internationally for their expertise in small boat sailing. They have sailed over 185,000 miles together, having circumnavigated the world both eastabout and westabout. They began cruising in 1968 and are still going strong. They have also sailed westabout (against the prevailing winds) past all the great southern capes, including Cape Horn. Larry built the two boats they used for two circumnavigations. Both boats were under 30 feet and were designed by Lyle Hess. Neither boat had an engine (except for an outboard on the dinghy which they carried on board Taleisin their larger boat.).

  • David Clark

  • Slocum Society’s Oldest Single Handed Sailor

    photo of David Clark

    David Clark

David Clark made three sail attempts to achieve his recognition. He sailed once and was not the oldest, so he went again and the boat sunk in the Indian Ocean. Undaunted, he then tried again. After passing Capetown into the Atlantic, his boat sank, he was rescued, but he lost his dog, Mickey. With assistance by sailors in Capetown, another boat was furnished, named "Mickey" and he finished his record single handed circumnavigation.

Recognized by The Slocum Society's as the oldest single handed circumnavigator. He supported his sailing adventures with social security and his clarinet.

David’s philosophy is that we can all make our dreams come true if we are willing to do whatever it takes. He hopes to bring a message to our society that older citizens have value, and that just because we get older "we ain’t dead yet."

On Feb. 8, 2001 the "Mollie Milar" sank 160 nm north of Saldanha Bay, South Africa. At approximately 1935 hours, Capt. Calsrk abandoned his boat. In the face of heavy seas and gale force winds, Capt. Popov, a Russian Captain for the Alpha Ship Co. of Bremen, Germany, displayed expert seamanship and hoisted Clark aboard the E Monte. Unfortunately Clark's dog, Mickey wriggled free of his bridle and was lost at sea. Clark returned to Cape Town, raised money to completed his circumnavigation, hence naming his second boat "Mickey."

    Ralph H. Perez

From May 19th through June 6, 2009, Ralph H. Perez and four Alaskans traveled in excess of 1,000 sea miles laying the course for the Alaskan Wet Dog Race, a proposed 2,000-mile personal watercraft race seven years in the making. The Alaskan Wet Dog Race is the longest Personal Watercraft (PWC) Endurance Race in the world. Personal Watercraft are sometimes referred to as Jet skis, Seadoos or Wave Runners; essentially small boats that are ridden on rather than in.

This thrilling adventure along with Ralph’s unique upbeat presentation skills and his exciting visuals will have you literally on the edge of your seats.

June 28, 2012 - Kevin Hardy - James Cameron's Dive to the Depths

The 27th program in our 90th Anniversary Celebration

Scripps Institute engineer, Kevin Hardy, who participated with the Challenger Deep dive of James Cameron will be telling us of that experience.

One of the challenges James Cameron faces in exploring the Mariana Trench is that no light is able to penetrate its extreme depths. That’s where the engineering know-how of Kevin Hardy and other Scripps researchers comes into play. Hardy, a Scripps research engineer, has developed telephone-booth-size landers that are dropped to the seafloor. The landers, technically known as Deep Ocean Vehicles (DOVs), are equipped with an acoustic beacon on top that Cameron can use to help navigate the ocean depths. The landers also provide a good sonar target.

Hardy has also armed the landers with equipment that Scripps scientists can use to collect and analyze deep-sea animals, sediment cores and seawater. These samples will enable scientists to identify new life forms. Scripps microbiologists will investigate the DNA of the samples to help understand how life evolves and adapts in the punishing extremes of the deep, as well as ascertain whether such microbes could be sources of novel natural products with potential biomedical value.

As part of James Cameron's "Deepsea Challenge," Scripps engineer Kevin Hardy (center, with hook) deploys a deep ocean vehicle (DOV), or "lander" that he developed to explore the mysteries of the world's deepest points.

When filmmaker James Cameron recently reached the depths of the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot in the world, the historic event culminated nearly a decade of interaction with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.

With Scripps scientist Doug Bartlett and engineer Kevin Hardy there to support Cameron’s international headline-grabbing “Deepsea Challenge,” the project achieved much more than a one-time record-breaking plunge into the deepest abyss. As the project’s primary science collaborator, Scripps, and in turn science, stand to gain much from the collaboration.
