Eight Summits World Premier

One Man, One Mission. Bill Burke had a goal after retirement, to stay active and healthy. With a goal to try mountaineering, little did he know that he would enter into the record books and become the oldest climber in the World to scale all eight of the highest peaks after age 60, then becoming the oldest American to summit Mt. Everest.

EIGHT SUMMITS is a remarkable film that captures Bill»s story and follows him along his journey into the record books. From his home town in California to Mt. McKinley and Mt. Everest, this compelling story will help you realize that anything is possible if you just work hard and believe in yourself.

Based on the remarkable life of Bill Burke, this film captures in stunning HD one man’s quest for the “Seven Summits” and a goal to bring awareness to the disabled and Angelman Syndrome. A story of inspiration and hope, EIGHT SUMMITS follows Bill on his world record climb of Mt. Everest and his attempt to be the first to climb Everest from both the North (Tibet) and the South (Nepal) in one season, at the age of 70.

For over 40 years Bill Burke was a corporate lawyer just dreaming about what he would do in retirement. Little did he know that he would become an inspiration to millions around the world.

At 60 years of age and keeping in mind that he had never climbed an alpine mountain in his life, Bill set a goal to climb the “Seven Summits,” the highest peaks on all seven of the world’s continents. He succeeded and, at age 67, summited Mt. Everest, becoming the oldest American to stand on top of the world at 29,035 feet and return alive. Because of an ongoing dispute about whether Australia is a continent, as opposed to Australasia, which includes a much larger land mass, Bill climbed the highest mountain in both Australia and Australasia, thus climbing eight summits on seven continents.

He is the only person to climb these eight mountains after reaching age 60.

Bill is inspired by his grandson, Oliver, who suffers from a rare disability called Angelman Syndrome. “I want to do whatever I can to raise awareness of the needs of the disabled and the responsibility of society to help the disabled reach their full potential” says Bill.

The Adventurers’ Club of Los Angeles thanks our members, Bill Burke and Allan R. Smith, for volunteering this presentation.

Roy W. Roush - Knights of the Golden Circle and the Great Mexican Train Robbery

"KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (KGC) AND THE GREAT MEXICAN TRAIN ROBBERY"

By Member Roy W. Roush # 864

HOW THE KGC STOLE THE MEXICAN NATIONAL TREASURY, 40 AMMUNITION BOXES OF AMERICAN 20 DOLLAR GOLD COINS, AND ALSO WHERE IT MAY BE HIDDEN TODAY.

Roy W. Roush

Roy W. Roush

That incident happened during the period of the Mexican Revolution in 1914 when Mexican President Huerta quietly resigned as president (since he knew he was about to be assassinated) and attempted to flee the country aboard a German Cruiser "The Dresden" that was waiting for him at Acapulco. However, a clever bandit leader by the name of Henry Hill and his gang ambushed the gold shipment, stole the gold that was described as 40 ammunition boxes containing American 20 Dollar gold coins and buried them in a very remote and mountainous area somewhere in the area of Michoacan. Eventually, Henry and his men were all captured after a big gun battle, and all were executed except Henry. Then Henry was told that if he told where the money was hidden, they would not execute him. After he told them where to go look, they killed him anyway and then went to look for the gold. Guess what? It wasn't there! Henry knew they were lying in wait for him - but he had told his son where it was, and his son had safely left for Texas. Later, in 1938, his son went looking for it with a friend, and they both carried out as much gold as they could secretly carry out. Then later, the son was killed in a attempt to go back after more coins. His friend found him hacked to death along the trail and his clothes and shoes had been stolen. It was extremely dangerous country, and it still is today!

In 1974, Roy was secretly contacted by a friend who lived in Mexico City (the only one who knew where the treasure was buried) to come to Mexico and bring two other treasure hunters with him, which lead to an amazing adventure, including how Roy discovered that the bandits were members of the Knights of the Golden Circle.

Bill Altaffer - Hero Cities of the Former Soviet Union - RUSSIA - UKRAINE - BELARUS

Bill Altaffer has set foot in every country in the world and has visited more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other person on the planet. To date, Bill has been to 799 of these sites which are deemed to have universal natural and/or cultural value. “[The status of Most Traveled Man] comes from various organizations that track travel. It allows me to say that there isn’t a person living whose country I haven’t visited,” said Bill, who has also surfed every continent and skied on six of them.

The traveling bug bit Bill early on in life. “My family [took] long trips around the world to over 80 countries. As I got older, I traveled as a surfer and then as a tour manager for Hemphill-Harris. When I joined the Traveler’s Century Club [a club for travelers who have been to 100+countries], I became motivated to visit every country in the world,” explained Bill, who credits world explorer John Goddard with inspiring him to engage in extreme travel.

Bill’s wife, Qing, is from Shanghai, and they met while Bill was traveling. While Bill may have settled down a bit, he is still involved in extreme travel. He owns Expedition Photo Travel, a company that designs custom, private travel to the most remote areas of the world. His next adventure is a circumnavigation of Turkey, with the island groups of the Spratlys and the Parcels as focal points.

According to Bill, the most incredible place he has visited is Socotra, a remote archipelago of four islands in the Indian Ocean. While he loves the people and the land of Russia, he has no desire to return to Siberia. And although it may seem like Bill racks up frequent flier miles, he points out that the airlines that fly to remote destinations often don’t have such programs. “I’m only average on frequent flier miles,” commented Bill. (story - Carmel newspaper)

Come join us as Bill recounts his amazing presentation on "Hero Cities of the Former Soviet Union - RUSSIA - UKRAINE - BELARUS"

Open Thursday - Ladies Night - Annie Jacobsen -
Operation Paperclip… The Secret Intelligence Program that Brought Nazi Scientists to America

Annie Jacobsen - A Group of 104 Rocket Scientists (Aerospace Engineers) at Fort Bliss, Texas

A Group of 104 Rocket Scientists (Aerospace Engineers) at Fort Bliss, Texas

The unbelievable but true story of how American military leadership schemed to hire Adolf Hitler’s scientists in a covert operation named:

OPERATION PAPERCLIP

The Secret Intelligence Program That Brought

Nazi Scientists to America

Annie Jacobsen

Annie Jacobsen

"As comprehensive as it is critical, this latest exposé from Jacobsen is perhaps her most important work to date... Jacobsen persuasively shows that it in fact happened and aptly frames the dilemma... Rife with hypocrisy lies, and deceit, Jacobsen’s story explores a conveniently overlooked bit of history."

Annie Jacobsen exploded onto the scene three years ago with her bestseller AREA 51, about America’s top-secret military testing site (now being developed by AMC as a scripted television series). At last, she returns with an even more electrifying exposé in OPERATION PAPERCLIP: The Secret Intelligence Program that Brought Nazi Scientists to America.

We all know that the government can hide unpleasant facts from the public in the name of national security, but the magnitude of secrecy—just how disturbing these truths are and how much we are kept in the dark—is more frightening than we could have imagined. As Jacobsen succinctly writes in her book’s prologue:

"This is a story about Nazi scientists and American government secrets. It is about how dark truths can be hidden from the public by U.S. officials in the name of national security, and it is about the unpredictable, often fortuitous, circumstances through which truth gets revealed. Operation Paperclip was a postwar U.S. intelligence program that brought German scientists to America under secret military contracts. The program had a benign public face and a classified body of secrets and lies. ‘I’m mad on technology,’ Adolf Hitler told his inner circle at a dinner party in 1942, and in the aftermath of the German surrender more than sixteen hundred of Hitler’s technologists would become America’s own."

Annie Jacobsen, an investigative reporter and former contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times Magazine, puts a spotlight on twenty-one of these men as she tells how American military leadership schemed to hire Hitler’s scientists in the chaos following World War II. The U.S. government secretly debated whether the value of their knowledge outweighed their crimes. In May of 1945, the U.S. government began a covert operation code-named Operation Paperclip to bring these scientists and their families to the United States, often putting science before justice. The age of weapons of mass destruction had matured and the underlying justification for hiring Nazis was that if America didn’t get these men, the Soviets surely would.

V-2 Launching at Peenemunde, on the North-East Baltic German Coast (1943)

V-2 Launching at Peenemunde, on the North-East Baltic German Coast (1943)

Eight of the twenty-one men profiled by Jacobsen in OPERATION PAPERCLIP worked, at some point, side by side with Third Reich leadership, including Heinrich Himmler, Hermann Göring, and even Adolf Hitler. Drawing on exclusive interviews with dozens of Paperclip family members, colleagues, and interrogators, and with access to German archival documents (including papers made available by direct descendants of the Third Reich’s ranking members), files obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, and dossiers discovered in government archives and at Harvard University, Annie Jacobsen follows more than a dozen German scientists through their postwar lives and into one of the most complex, nefarious, and jealously guarded secrets of the twentieth century.

Many of these men were accused of war crimes. Others stood trial at Nuremberg. Yet they had also pioneered major advances in the science of warfare. Here in America they continued their weapons-related work for the U.S. government, developing rockets, chemical and biological weapons, and aviation and space medicine. Many of them won top military and civilian awards here—one had a government building named after him, and as of 2013, two have prestigious national science prizes given annually in their names. One invented the ear thermometer and others helped with NASA’s first mission to the moon.

Annie Jacobsen provides a masterful narrative grounded in solid research and facts. She asks the hard questions:

—How did this happen and what does this mean now?

—What role did former Nazis play in the creation of the American "military-industrial complex"?

—Do scientific accomplishments mitigate moral crimes?

—Should government pursue science at any cost?

There are no easy answers in this dark and complicated tale.

Annie Jacobson is a journalist and the author of the New York Times bestseller Area 51. She is a graduate of Princeton University and lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons.
